ArmInfo.Armenia may apply to join the European Union. This was stated by European Commission's lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy Peter Stano . "However, the further decision on the integration of a particular country depends on unanimous approval from the EU countries," he noted.
"Countries have the right to strive for a better future for their people. They are free to decide how to secure that future. As for EU membership, each European country, its people and government, should decide whether they want to apply for EU membership ", he told Izvestia in response to the question whether the doors of the European Union are open to Armenia.
Mr. Stano recalled that as soon as a country submits an application to join the European Union, it is reviewed by the member states and then they make an appropriate decision based on EU treaties and established standarts.
Notably, on March 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for support for Yerevan's desire to apply for candidate status for EU membership. The Armenian leadership welcomed the resolution of the European Parliament. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the public should discuss this topic, noting that the government has the "political will" to continue cooperation with the European Union.
