ArmInfo.Germany is pleased that they can play a mediating role in the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Germany's charge d'affaires in Armenia, Deputy Ambassador Erik Tintrup , stated at a press conference in Yerevan on February 27.
In this vein, the diplomat recalled that a meeting of the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan will be held in Berlin on February 28-29. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the draft peace treaty. Speaking about Armenian-German relations, the diplomat assured that that they are at a high level, as evidenced by the intensity of mutual visits at the high and highest levels.
"This is evidenced by the visit of Bundestag MPs to Yerevan these days." As the diplomat noted, they have been in Yerevan for the third day now and are holding meetings at different levels. "They represent all political forces represented in the country's parliament," he added.
Regarding the criticism of journalists about the disproportionate response of the collective West to Azerbaijan's aggression against Armenia and Artsakh, Mr. Tintrup noted that he perfectly understands the feelings of those gathered, since he has been in Armenia since September 2022 (then Azerbaijan invaded the sovereign territory of Armenia in several directions, ed. note).
At the same time, the diplomat emphasized that Germany expressed its position on what was happening at the level of its Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during the last meeting of the UN Security Council, convened by France on the situation around Artsakh.
"FM Baerbock also expressed the position of our government during her last year's visit to Armenia," he noted.
At the same time, the Deputy Ambassador recalled that today Germany is providing assistance to Armenia in two main areas: promoting the agenda of democratic reforms in the country and the peace process between Yerevan and Baku.
"Anything beyond this requires additional coordination with all EU member states," the diplomat concluded.
During an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh on September 22, 2023, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that Azerbaijan had chosen the path of military force. "We actively condemn the attack by Baku and call for a complete cessation of all hostilities. A lot of people died in just two days, thousands were forced to flee their homes. We took note of the reports of a ceasefire, but now a complete cessation of violence is necessary. Azerbaijan bears responsibility to fully ensure the protection of the civilian population, especially children, who live in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The exodus of ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh is unacceptable. The territorial integrity and sovereignty of both Armenia and Azerbaijan should not be questioned. It is difficult to imagine the difficulties and hardships that the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh endure in the months after the Baku authorities simply closed the Lachin corridor. The shops are empty, there is no medicine, there is no electricity or fuel," she noted then.
