ArmInfo. The situation in the South Caucasus and Central Asia is far from stable. CSTO Secretary General Imangali Tasmagambetov wrote in his article for the "The International Affairs" magazine.
In this vein, the CSTO Secretary General stated that in recent years, relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the border conflict between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have become the most problematic. ""As for the extremely alarming situation in the South Caucasus, particularly the Karabakh problem, it should be noted that the organization was ready to send a peacekeeping mission to the Armenian- Azerbaijani border to monitor the situation, however, in the final part of this work, Yerevan asked to remove the corresponding document from the agenda in connection with the upcoming conclusion of a peace treaty with Baku.
At the same time, Armenia's work in the Organization continues, Yerevan's multilateral contacts within the CSTO are carried out in working order, Armenia has been and remains an ally. The CSTO states, in turn, remain focused on developing allied relations with the Republic of Armenia," Tasmagambetov noted.
At the same time, he emphasized that 2023 was extremely eventful, which highlighted the need to bring the functionality of the CSTO in line with the requirements of the time. He also informed that the Republic of Belarus completed 32 of the 34 tasks set during its presidency in the CSTO last year.
"The exception was tasks related to establishing contacts with European partners, as well as fulfilling the instructions of the Collective Security Council to finalize the decision on assistance to Armenia. The lack of significant results here, according to the Belarusian side, is due to the specific attitude of Western countries towards the political leadership of Belarus and its ally the Russian Federation," the Secretary General of the Organization summarized.
