ArmInfo. Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Peter Mihalko , was summoned to the country's Foreign Ministry, where he was once again informed that "the activities of the EU Monitoring Mission in Armenia, which are contrary to the initial agreements, raise serious concerns."
"It was emphasized that the EU monitoring mission has become "a conduit of "binocular diplomacy", facilitating the organisation of visits to border regions by various European officials as well as unofficial delegations".
All such visits are used to spread anti-Azerbaijani hatred and replicate unjustified Azerbaijanophobia," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry believes Without exception, 'all such visits are used to spread anti-Azerbaijani hatred and replicate unjustified Azerbaijanophobia". The fact that "binocular diplomacy" is observed at a time when the calm reigns along the border and Azerbaijan and Armenia are implementing serious confidence-building measures is of particular concern," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It was also noted that "The recent case of an attempted illegal border crossing through EUMA's areas of responsibility casts a shadow over the tasks of the Confidence Building Support Mission .The Azerbaijani MFA urged the EU to take all necessary measures to ensure that the EUMA on the territory of Armenia acts strictly as a neutral, civilian and unarmed mission and refrains from taking steps against the sovereignty, territorial integrity of Azerbaijan or its security interests," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry concluded.
On February 6, head of the EU delegation to Azerbaijan, Peter Mihalko responded to Baku's attacks on the civil mission of the European Union in Armenia (EUMA).
"I regret that in the recent days, some media in Azerbaijan published absolutely baseless allegations against the EU Mission in Armenia. I underline that EUMA is a civilian, unarmed mission & its mandate is to observe. The presence of the mission aims to contribute to stability & confidence building. The EU will continue its efforts to support peace settlement between Azerbaijan & Armenia" Peter Mihalko wrote on his account on Twitter (X).
