ArmInfo. The Hayakve (Armenian referendum) initiative has announced the launch of the movement of Armenia's Constitution.
According to the source, on February 6, the initiative's council will announce the priority steps in the fight. The movement will be formed with the goal of preserving both the Basic Law of the country and the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Armenia.
According to the current legislation in Armenia, when 50 thousand or more votes of citizens are collected, a legislative initiative on a particular issue can be submitted to the country's parliament. Apparently, Hayakve members intend to take advantage of this opportunity to prohibit at the legislative level attempts to change the Constitution and the provisions of the Declaration of Independence of the country.
On January 19, at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan stated the need to adopt a new Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, in the preamble of which there is a reference to the Declaration of Independence adopted in 1990, which mentions the joint resolution of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR and the National Council of Nagorno- Karabakh dated 1 December 1989 "On the reunification of the Armenian SSR and Nagorno-Karabakh." In addition, the declaration enshrines the main provisions for the formation of statehood - from establishing relations with other countries to demanding international recognition of the Armenian genocide of 1915 in Ottoman Turkey.
Last year, the Armenian prime minister spoke of disagreement with the Declaration of Independence, which contained a "confrontational narrative." Before Pashinyan's latest statement about the need for a new Constitution, only amendments to the Basic Law were discussed.
