ArmInfo. The strategic interests of Russia and Armenia coincide and the two nations remain allies, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopirkin said.
"I proceed from the fact, and not only me, but this is, naturally, the position of the leadership of the Russian Federation, that our relations have, continue to have an allied character. You know, there are a lot of things that connect us historically. Needless to say, mention that connects our peoples throughout many centuries of history," Kopirkin said.
According to him, in addition to this, countries today have a very broad practical agenda for mutual relations, which concerns key aspects of the life of states and people.
"I am convinced that this is a solid basis, a solid foundation that gives a margin of safety to our relations. I am also convinced that in terms of the main parameters, our strategic interests also objectively converge, this has again been proven by both older and modern history. Therefore, I think it is absolutely correct that the Russian side is making a clear point that our relations, despite all the problems, some misunderstandings, attempts by external players to create cracks between our relations in their own opportunistic, geopolitical interests, retain and must maintain an allied, strategic character," Kopirkin said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Regarding the process of normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, the diplomat assured that Russia is ready to provide maximum possible assistance in achieving peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
"The Russian side has worked very actively, persistently, consistently and continues to work in this direction. This is evidenced by our actions, I won't even list them, by what was done with the participation, on the initiative of the Russian side in this regard. I want to say, that Russia remains firmly committed to providing maximum possible assistance to this process, to achieving a truly sustainable, fair peace settlement between Armenia and Azerbaijan," Kopirkin said.
He noted that Moscow is interested in stable peace in the region. "We support the process of normalization of relations and Russia has always very actively emphasized its readiness to work in this direction in all aspects, be it the conclusion of a peace treaty, be it delimitation, demarcation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, be it the development of confidence-building measures, including contacts through civil society, be it the opening of communications," the ambassador added.
In this vein, he drew attention to the fact that the corresponding tripartite structures have been created, and Russia is actively participating in them. "I repeat: Russia is firmly committed to providing the maximum possible, required assistance to this process. Of course, it is up to the parties to decide, this is their sovereign issue. But, I repeat: Russia has been, remains and will remain committed to active work in this direction. For us, this the issue is vital. The South Caucasus region is a very important region for us, and it is in our vital interests that the region be peaceful, stable and prosperous," Kopirkin emphasized.
