ArmInfo. Azerbaijan does not have the goal of peaceful coexistence with Armenia. The "Peace Treaty" is just a simple manipulation to break the resistance of the people of Armenia. This is how Candidate of Historical Sciences, Turkologist Varuzhan Geghamyan commented on yesterday's interview of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Azerbaijani media.
The expert stated that Azerbaijan is now in the pre-election stage, so the president of the enemy country, Aliyev, speaks more openly than usual about his current and future plans. In this vein, the political scientist added that yesterday, January 10, he gave an interview to Azerbaijani media for about three hours. "This 'perfectly' organized interview was, in fact, the first big step of Aliyev's election campaign. When I went through the content of the interview in detail, this is what I highlighted for you "in Aliyev's words." I would like to note straight away that this is in fact, the logic and those points that lie in the basis of the so- called "Armenian-Azerbaijani peace negotiations," Geghamyan noted, providing 10 points of conclusions on this matter.
According to the political scientist, firstly, in the document entitled "Peace Treaty", if it is signed, the border and clear territory between Armenia and Azerbaijan will not be mentioned in any way. "Consequently, Azerbaijan can violate it at any time, claiming that "there is no border, and accordingly there are no border violations." The document is about nothing, but which completely clears Azerbaijan of the crimes committed in the Artsakh issue and legally closes it. The ignorance called "cadastre paper" was also blown away," said Geghamyan.
Secondly, according to the expert, Azerbaijan will not leave the internationally recognized territory of Armenia occupied after November 2020 (at least 300 sq. km), and the absurdity of the idea of a "mirror withdrawal of troops" was once again proven.
"Thirdly, Azerbaijan is doing everything to sign the document without an intermediary, so that it can be violated at any time without unnecessary headaches. This point will not appeal to those who like "there will be international guarantees" and "the world will not allow an attack on us ", he added. Fourthly, according to him, Azerbaijan will not open the border with Armenia and will continue the complete blockade of Armenia. "Therefore, Turkey will do the same. Moreover, at the moment their task is to cut off Armenia from its two main external routes - to Georgia and Iran. To do this, they use the topic of so-called enclaves. The absurdity of the "Crossroads of Peace" idea was proven once again," the political scientist continued.
Geghamyan notes in the fifth point that Azerbaijan proceeds from the assertion that Armenia is currently 'occupying' 8 villages of Azerbaijan, 4 of which are located on the border itself, and the remaining 4 are located inside the border (in the form of an "enclave"). "Azerbaijan "cannot come to terms with this situation" and "will do everything to free them." Moreover, Azerbaijan insists that roads leading to enclaves be provided, which "must be inhabited by Azerbaijanis." These are mini-corridors. By the way, Aliyev said that this topic is now being discussed in the demarcation commission. It is not this topic that is being discussed, it is the technical implementation of Azerbaijan's conditions that is being discussed," the expert noted.
Moreover, Geghamyan added the following point that Azerbaijan demands a corridor through the Syunik region of Armenia, and nothing else, and all this under the guise of "unimpeded passage." "Moreover, through the very specific place, through Meghri, because this is the "shortest and most convenient route" to Nakhijevan. At the same time, Aliyev hinted that at any moment he could take this path with force," the Turkologist added.
Geghamyan noted that Azerbaijan recognizes the fact that its territorial claims to Armenia became possible thanks to the victory in Artsakh. "Aliyev literally says that the capture of Shushi allowed him to open the issue of Zangezur. It is difficult to find better evidence that Artsakh was the main means of protecting Syunik and the rest of Armenia. Moreover, this was said through the mouth of the enemy," he continued. At the same time, the Turkologist believes that Azerbaijan will do everything to capture also Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Robert Kocharyan. "Aliyev said this directly," he stated.
Geghamyan also noted that throughout the interview Aliyev used Turkic place names for all regions of Armenia: "Irevan" (Yerevan), "Western Zangezur" (Syunik), "Istisu" (Jermuk), etc. "He also notes that if there is a demarcation on the map, then the issue of belonging to Yerevan should be discussed. This is one of the most important manifestations of the dimension of Azerbaijan, with the help of which Azerbaijani society is now being educated," the Turkologist added.
With the last point, Geghamyan reminds that Azerbaijan is one of the main partners of the European Union in terms of gas supplies. According to him, this is why Azerbaijan is in no way afraid of Western pressure, because this will not happen. The Turkologist added that Azerbaijan has to play a smart game with Russia, which is what is being done (sending targeted messages to Moscow even at the interview level).
"There were other interesting points in the interview, but these 10 points were the main ones, which, in fact, make up the package of so-called "Armenian-Azerbaijani" negotiations at the moment. Conclusions: Azerbaijan does not have the goal of peaceful coexistence with Armenia.
The "Peace Treaty" is just a simple manipulation to break the resistance of the people in Armenia. Concessions on any of these points will lead to new demands from Azerbaijan and Turkey, just as concessions on the Artsakh issue jeopardized Syunik and Jermuk," Geghamyan concluded.
