ArmInfo. The consensus on holding the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku demonstrates that the climate platform today can effectively solve peacekeeping tasks, in particular in the Armenian-Azerbaijani settlement, stated Sergei Kononuchenko, Special Representative of the Russian Foreign Minister for climate issues.
The diplomat recalled that after Armenia withdrew its candidacy to host COP29 in support of Azerbaijan's candidacy, which was also supported by members of the Eastern European Group of COP28, Baku will host the corresponding conference for the first time in 2024.
"As a result of quite complex negotiations, it was possible to achieve that for the first time in the history of the conference of the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the conference of the parties will be held in the Eastern European group, but not in a member state of the European Union. As part of the negotiations on this issue, countries, namely Azerbaijan and Armenia managed to find a mutually acceptable compromise," TASS reports, quoting the official as saying.
"This shows that the climate platform can serve to resolve the most important issues, even those not directly related to climate, and serve to promote the peace agenda," the special representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.
A number of European politicians and public figures have already criticized the decision to hold the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Azerbaijan, calling it unacceptable against the backdrop of the violent seizure of Artsakh.
