ArmInfo.Baku's demands to include a clause in the draft peace treaty with Armenia on the Armenian side's refusal to take revenge nothing but diplomatic nonsense, political expert Vigen Hakobyan told ArmInfo.
The political strategist noted that such demands are incomprehensible from the point of view of their fixation in the peace treaty. It is clear, the political scientist continued, that Azerbaijan is now doing everything to forever consolidate the situation that has developed today and that will take place in the future. "Thus, Baku foreshadows future events, because the concept of "revenge" can be understood as anything.
They, for example, can raise the issue of political parties, whose statements and positions may not please Baku and which may see revanchist sentiments behind them, demanding the closure of one or another political force within the Armenian state. The same may apply even to individuals," the political scientist noted, adding that the authorities of a neighboring state may issue an ultimatum regarding Armenia's purchases of weapons and armed equipment, characterizing this possibility as a threat to itself and a violation of the status quo regarding the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Thus, Hakobyan emphasized, Baku will constantly interfere both in the internal affairs of Armenia and put pressure on its foreign policy agenda. "Without a doubt, this kind of demand is nonsense. I cannot imagine a self-respecting state that could subscribe to this kind of demand, allowing the other side to constantly interfere in its internal affairs and foreign policy activities," he said.
He also pointed to Baku's demand to include in the peace treaty the thesis on the return of Azerbaijanis to Armenia. According to the political scientist, the implementation of this requirement could lead to both a disruption of the demographic situation in the country and the emergence of "Cyprus-2". Baku may regard any incident with Azerbaijanis in Armenia as a violation of their rights with subsequent actions, including the deployment of troops and the creation of a new state on the territory of the Republic of Armenia similar to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
On December 6, at the forum "Karabakh: Returning Home After 30 Years. Achievements and Difficulties," Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that Baku needs guarantees that there will be no attempts at revanchism in Armenia. He noted that Azerbaijan needs this because "we know what is happening in Armenia," "we are aware of advisers in some European capitals." "We would like there to be no war at all between the two countries, and there should be guarantees in this regard," Aliyev said, adding that the Armenian side "should forget about the "NKR" remaining in history and begin delimiting the border."
