ArmInfo. Russia is convinced that the CSTO, especially in the current conditions, has an important role to play in terms of ensuring regional stability. Official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova stated on November 22 during a briefing, referring to Armenia's non-participation in the upcoming CSTO summit.
Zakharova expressed regret over the decision of the Armenian leadership not to participate in the upcoming CSTO events. "We do not believe that this decision meets the long-term interests of the Armenian people and will contribute to strengthening the security and stability of this friendly country. At the same time, as far as we understand, our Armenian partners do not intend to block the work of the Organization's statutory bodies or impede the approval of already agreed documents. Essentially, this leaves the door open for Yerevan to join in the work later. We hope that the Armenian allies will take advantage of this opportunity in the near future," she noted.
At the same time, she expressed the conviction that the CSTO, especially in the current conditions, has an important role to play in terms of ensuring regional stability.
Zakharova added that the deployment of a CSTO monitoring mission in the Armenian-Azerbaijani border area, a decision on which is still on the table, would become a significant factor in terms of ensuring the security of Armenia, "unlike the EU mission, which continues to demonstrate its complete ineffectiveness and performs tasks that are far from stated, which we have repeatedly said," she concluded.
As it became known yesterday, Armenia will not participate at a high level in the activities of CSTO statutory bodies to be held in Minsk on November 23. Yesterday, November 21, it became known that the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of Armenia will no longer participate in the CSTO events in Minsk.
Prior to this, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan notified the Belarusian side that he would not be able to take part in the CSTO summit in Minsk. However, Pashinyan assured that Armenia, by its refusal to participate in CSTO events, does not prepare the ground for leaving the organization.
