ArmInfo. The process of delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border should take place in accordance with the Soviet maps of 1975. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Vahan Kostanyan told reporters on November 9.
According to him, all problems, including those of enclaves, should be considered from a legal perspective, in particular, in accordance with the legislation of the Soviet period. The deputy minister noted that not only Baku has questions about the enclaves, but Yerevan is raising the problem of four villages in the Tavush region of the country.
Answering the question, on what basis are the country's authorities guided by the encyclopedia of a country that no longer exists, regarding the territorial integrity of the state, Kostanyan pointed out the necessity of the concept of the entire legal process. In accordance with the Almaty Declaration of 1991, the republics of the former USSR are recognized as independent states within their administrative borders. The fact that a commission has been established for the delimitation and subsequent demarcation of borders speaks of the seriousness of the intentions of the Armenian side. This issue should become a cornerstone in the process of concluding a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. "Armenia is interested in concluding an agreement on the settlement of relations with Azerbaijan, but there are a number of issues on which the parties still need to bring their positions closer," said the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia.
On November 8, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement noting that "Armenia has not yet returned eight villages to Azerbaijan." On October 7, President of this country, Ilham Aliyev, voiced similar claims against Yerevan in a telephone conversation with President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that as part of the development of a peace treaty, Yerevan and Baku agreed on three basic principles. In particular, the parties agreed to delimitate the border on the basis of the Alma-Ata Declaration. He emphasized that in this matter it is important to have maps that reflect the reality of that time. The Armenian Prime Minister pointed out the presence of these maps.
