ArmInfo. Official Baku rejected the accusations against Azerbaijan, which were voiced by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly in Yerevan. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan stated that threats to impose sanctions against Azerbaijan are unacceptable. Baku assured that Joly's statements about the deportation of Karabakh Armenians and the humanitarian crisis in the region are unfounded.
"Having expressed support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Armenia, Joly did not show similar respect for the integrity of Azerbaijan," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry noted, assuring that the Artsakh people "voluntarily" left the NKR.
"As for the assertions that Canada does not rule out sanctions against Azerbaijan, attempts to put pressure on Azerbaijan are a deep misconception and such measures will never bring success to anyone," the staement reads, Turan reports.
On October 25, during a briefing following negotiations with RA Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, answering the question whether the Canadian government was considering the possibility of imposing sanctions against Azerbaijan, emphasized that sanctions against Azerbaijan are 'on the table'.
"First of all, I came to definitely strengthen relations between Armenia and Canada. And we are doing this with concrete actions, opening a Canadian diplomatic mission in Armenia for the first time. Now our presence in the country is important to promote democratic processes. Regarding sanctions, I have already said that they are 'on the table'. Having said this, we still expect that the territorial integrity of Armenia will be respected, and this is a circumstance that we are closely monitoring," FM Joly concluded.
Today FM Joly visited the city of Jermuk and got acquainted with the Azerbaijani occupation of the sovereign territories of the Republic of Armenia.
