ArmInfo. Lithuania supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia, said Prime Minister of this country Ingrida Simonyte in Yerevan following a meeting with her Armenian counterpart Nikol Pashinyan.
According to her, she is proud that Lithuania became the first state to recognize the independence of Armenia in 1991. "I'm glad to be here today and confirm Lithuania's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia," she said.
She noted that today Armenia faces numerous challenges. "I express my sincere condolences to the families of those killed as a result of the wars in Nagorno-Karabakh. I sympathize with the people who left their homes. The Lithuanian government has provided humanitarian and financial assistance to Armenia, and although this will not alleviate the suffering and pain of people, it will nevertheless help meet urgent needs," PM Simonyte said.
As Lithuanian PM indicated, she highly appreciates Armenia's commitment to the peace process and expresses support for the mediation efforts of the EU and the United States.
"I hope that the parties (Armenia and Azerbaijan, ed. note) will adhere to their obligations, showing mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. I believe that through dialogue it is possible to achieve lasting peace. The path to peace is not easy, but it is the only way to achieve stability and prosperity throughout the region," the Prime Minister of Lithuania said.
According to her, during the negotiations with PM Pashinyan they discussed the security situation in the region. The Lithuanian Prime Minister reiterated her deep conviction that democracies must unite and stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of shared values and a rules-based international world order. That is why she is in Armenia today.
In addition, Lithuanian PM noted that she confirmed her sincere desire to see the expansion of the presence of the European Union in Armenia. "I confirmed that Lithuania intends to support the deepening of EU- Armenia relations," the prime minister said.
She noted that the European Union remains Armenia's main partner in the reform process. Lithuania is ready to provide expert support for the implementation of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, as well as the overall process of reforms taking place in Armenia.
Lithuanian PM is convinced that Armenia's success in the reform process will help strengthen Armenia's democracy, increase its sustainability and ensure Armenia's rightful place in the community of democracies. "An independent, sovereign, secure and prosperous democratic Armenia, as well as peace and stability in the South Caucasus are our common goals. Lithuania is committed to working together to achieve them," said the Prime Minister of Lithuania.
