ArmInfo.Armenia's security allies have publicly called for the overthrow of the democratic leadership in the country, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during a speech in the European Parliament.
According to Pashinyan, democracy in Armenia is facing serious challenges. But, if Armenia had not been democratic country, then after the blows it had experienced, it would have lost its independence and sovereignty. This is evidenced by the events of 2020 and 2021, he added, recalling the events subsequent to the signing of the tripartite agreement of November 9, 2020, his resignation and dissolution of parliament, as well as early elections to the RA parliament.
"On May 12, 2021, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces violated the borders of Armenia and invaded up to 4 km into the sovereign territory of Armenia over a length of up to 100 km. In this situation, the CSTO, which is considered the security system of Armenia, and the countries that have security obligations under bilateral agreements did not help Armenia in any way, leaving us alone," he said. This, according to Pashinyan, was aimed at the failure of early elections and the formation of a government from among "their proteges." Despite this, Armenia managed to hold free and democratic elections, as a result of which the internal political crisis was overcome, he emphasized.
However, democracy in Armenia has received and continues to receive serious blows based on the same scenario. "First comes external aggression, then the inaction of Armenia's allies, and then attempts to use the military or humanitarian situation to overthrow the government in the country, which manifests itself in hybrid technologies, provoking internal unrest directed by external forces. After 2020, there were several similar cases, the largest of which was the attack on Armenia by Azerbaijan in September 2022, as a result of which the sovereign territory of Armenia was occupied," Pashinyan noted.
The most recent and most tragic example is the recent events when Azerbaijan, implementing its long-term policy of ethnic cleansing, launched a large-scale attack on Nagorno-Karabakh. "While more than 100,000 Armenians fled from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, our security allies not only did not help us, but also made public calls for a change of power, the overthrow of the democratic leadership in Armenia. But the people of Armenia united for the sake of sovereignty, independence and democracy and "another conspiracy" failed," Pashinyan said.
According to the prime minister, the government and people have united to help victims of ethnic cleansing from Nagorno-Karabakh.
