ArmInfo. The formation of municipal police has got underway in Yerevan.
Currently, work continues to develop a concept for creating a municipal police. As Vice-Mayor Suren Grigoryan noted, negotiations on its creation are underway with the US Embassy in Armenia. In accordance with the agreement reached, the Armenian side will conduct an inventory of all those functions that will have to correspond to the American model of municipal police. Last week, proposals from the Armenian side were sent to the embassy. "But regardless of the reaction from our American partners, we ourselves are starting the process of creating a municipal police," Grigoryan noted.
In turn, Tigran Avinyan emphasized that the issue of technical and financial assistance from the United States is a secondary issue. "We must start this process ourselves, because no one knows better than us about the existing problems," noted the mayor of the Armenian capital.
The US government contributed to the creation of the Patrol Service in Armenia, its logistical support, and the provision of high-quality expert assistance in training patrol officers. The United States also provides the republic with serious assistance in the fight against drug trafficking, in the creation of a water patrol service and a training complex for the Ministry of Internal Affairs on the basis of the Crisis Management Academy.
