ArmInfo. The working group, within the framework of the instructions of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, was sent to Goris airport and studied the scope of the upcoming work on the ground. Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Gnel Sanosyan stated on September 13 at the government hour in the National Assembly.
According to him, work is to be done in two directions, first of all, it concerns the modernization of the runway itself, and then the necessary infrastructure designed to serve citizens.
In addition, the authorities are considering the possibility of reconstructing the reserve air harbors for Kapan Airport. As the minister explained, there have already been 4 cases when flights to or from Kapan were canceled or postponed, for example, due to unfavorable weather conditions, and due to the lack of airports in the neighborhood, the airliner was forced to return to Yerevan. Goris airport could be a backup airport, he added. Today, work is underway on a feasibility study.
According to Sanosyan, currently, after eliminating a number of technical issues, regular Yerevan-Kapan- Yerevan flights are operated every Monday and Friday. The process of purchasing new navigation devices is underway, which will improve the quality of service. The only problem today is unfavorable weather conditions, he explained.
On August 17, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan flew from Yerevan to Kapan by plane and, after familiarizing himself with the conditions of the Syunik airport, at a meeting in the regional administration announced that from August 19 a representative flight would be carried out on the occasion of Kapan Day. On August 18, the National Security Service of Armenia reported shelling of the Kapan airport by Azerbaijan.
