ArmInfo. The European Court of Human Rights forwarded to the Armenian side the information provided by Azerbaijan regarding Vagif Khachatryan. This information was passed on to Khachatryan's relatives. The Office of the Representative of Armenia on International Legal Matters reports.
According to the source, Armenia will submit its objections to the facts and position presented by Azerbaijan within the deadline set by the aforesaid court; that is, by August 16.
On July 29, 68-year-old Vagif Khachatryan, who, having serious health issues, was being transported from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia for medical treatment, accompanied by the International Committee of Red Cross, was abducted by the representatives of the border guard service of Azerbaijan at the illegal checkpoint installed on the Lachin corridor and taken in an unknown direction without any reliable explanation.
For several hours, nothing was known about his fate, later the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan informed about detention of Khachatryan, accusing him of war crimes allegedly committed in 1991. The Armenian Foreign Ministry qualified the actions of the Azerbaijanis as a kidnapping, and Ombudsperson Anahit Manasyan said that the incident is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, since Vagif Khachatryan was under the protection of the ICRC.
On July 30, the representative of Armenia on International Legal Matters Yeghishe Kirakosyan reported that an application was submitted to the European Court of Human Rights to protect the rights of Vagif Khachatryan with a demand to apply an interim measure to Azerbaijan.
