ArmInfo.First of all, the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh need a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem rather than the international community. On July 25, RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at a press conference.
According to him, it is not the international community that is experiencing the suffering that the population of Nagorno-Karabakh has faced. "Who said that the international community is much more in need of a resolution to the conflict than the Republic of Armenia?" Pashinyan asked, adding that the international community is making efforts to resolve the situation, as evidenced by the resolution of the Council of Europe, the European Parliament did the same, at the last meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council, almost all representatives of the countries also expressed an unambiguous position. The prime minister also recalled the clear position of the International Court of Justice, which issued its decisions on February 22 and July 16 this year. Nevertheless, as Pashinyan noted, these efforts are not enough to resolve the situation, but the solution of this issue is most likely less important for the international community than for Armenia itself.
Answering the question whether the head of government in Brussels discussed Azerbaijan's proposal to use Aghdam as a corridor to Nagorno-Karabakh, the Prime Minister stressed that this issue was not discussed. "I do not have a mandate to discuss the issue of Aghdam, but, yes, there is such a mandate on the Lachin corridor,, since it was established on the basis of a tripartite statement by the leaders of Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan dated November 9, 2020. Accordingly, we are talking about the illegal blocking of the Lachin corridor and our demands for its opening on international platforms," Pashinyan said, reaffirming that the issue of Aghdam, which the President of the European Council Charles Michel spoke about, was not discussed at the meeting in Brussels. Moreover, against the backdrop of the decision of the International Court of Justice, which demanded that Baku open the Lachin corridor for the free movement of the population, vehicles and goods in both directions.
On July 15, at a briefing after a trilateral meeting between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Charles Michel supported Baku's proposal on a humanitarian corridor through Agdam for the population of Nagorno-Karabakh. Earlier, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said that Baku does not exclude the possibility of providing assistance along the Agdam-Stepanakert road to meet the needs of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to Michel, during the meeting they discussed the humanitarian problems existing in the region, in particular the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to him, the current state of affairs does not meet the interests of the parties. He assured that possible concrete steps to help return the situation to normal course were discussed. "I stressed the importance of opening the Lachin road, and also noted Azerbaijan's readiness to equally carry out humanitarian supplies through Aghdam. I consider both options important and encourage humanitarian supplies from both sides to meet the needs of people," the head of the European Council said.
Michel also welcomed the resumption of work of the International Committee of the Red Cross on the Lachin corridor.
