ArmInfo. The UN does not have any tools for recognizing borders. On July 18, First Human Rights Defender of Armenia Larisa Alaverdyan stated during a rally in support of Artsakh near the French Embassy.
In this regard, she drew attention to the fact that the recognition of Azerbaijan itself was solely due to false political agreements. "Not a single lawyer can refute my words, there is not a single legal justification for the so-called Republic of Azerbaijan to be recognized today," the human rights activist stressed.
She assured that there is not a single international legal document that would indicate the Soviet borders of states. <Tell this nonsense to your illiterate masses>, she said. In this regard, Alaverdyan turned to the Alma-Ata Declaration, which is constantly cited as confirmation that Armenia recognized Azerbaijan in accordance with the borders of the Soviet period. <That's a lie! This declaration does not indicate the Soviet borders, but clearly says "existing borders", the former Ombudswoman emphasized.
She recalled that in December 1991, a referendum was held in Artsakh, after which the Republic declared its independence. Azerbaijan did not hold referendums in accordance with the Law of the USSR.
"Azerbaijan joined and left the USSR illegally," the human rights activist stressed.
Stating that Azerbaijan in tandem with Turkey poses a threat not only to the South Caucasus region, Larisa Alaverdyan assured that the latter's appetite to see the world as Turkish will not be limited to Armenia and Artsakh.
Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Artsakh, Sergey Ghazaryan, in an interview in April this year, stated that the Alma-Ata Declaration was never considered as a political and legal basis for the settlement of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict or for determining the status of Artsakh. At the same time, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, also in April of this year, from the rostrum of the parliament, announced the readiness of the Republic of Armenia to recognize the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan in accordance with the Alma-Ata Declaration. At the same time, he noted that when signing this declaration, Armenia did not make any reservations, and, therefore, there is no possibility to keep Artsakh as Armenian. We add that the Alma-Ata Declaration states that countries join the document within the borders that existed at that time. That is, a priori, Azerbaijan, which signed the document only in 1993, joined it without Artsakh.
