ArmInfo.Russian expert, Professor Evgeny Satanovsky has expressed his opinion on the future of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians in the context of present-day Turkish- Azerbaijani relations.
In his interview with Ermenihaber, he commented on Turkish President Recep Erdogan's statement that Russian peacekeepers will leave Nagorno-Karabakh in 2025, the expert said that in this case the Armenians' future in that territory is greatly doubtful. "If no other decision is made as a result of the interaction between the presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan, everything else is technical problems," he said.
He noted that after the 2020 war, great changes have taken place in the region. "After the war, Turkey signed the Shusha Declaration with Azerbaijan, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan recognized Nagorno-Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan. After that, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev clearly stated that the Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh either receive Azerbaijani citizenship, Azerbaijani passports and live according to today's Azerbaijani laws, or let them leave,," Satanovsky said.
He noted that in this situation, the Armenian people need, while there is still time, to save the civilian population of Nagorno-Karabakh, first of all, women and children. "As for the future of the Armenians living in Karabakh within the framework of today's Turkish-Azerbaijani relations, I do not believe in it, as well as in the future of Armenians in Turkey," Mr Satanovsky said.
