ArmInfo. Elections to the Council of Elders of Yerevan will be held on September 17. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated during a government meeting on July 13.
The last mayor of Yerevan, Hrachya Sargsyan, resigned in March this year. Acting mayor today is Levon Hovhannisyan.
According to the law on local self-government, the mayor of Yerevan is elected by the 65-member council of elders. If one of the parties receives more than 50% of the mandates as a result of the council elections, then the candidate leading its list is considered the elected mayor.
As of today, there are 8 candidates for the post of mayor: Yerevan Vice Mayor Tigran Avinyan, former head of the Kentron community Viktor Mnatsakanyan, businesswoman Natalya Rotenberg, singer Ruben Hakhverdyan, head of the Luys faction of the Council of Elders David Khazhakyan, head of the board of the National Progress party Hayk Grigoryan and leader of the Country of Living party Mane Tandilyan.
