Artsakh presidential advisor comments on ICJ decision on Lachin corridor

ArmInfo. On July 6, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has reaffirmed its order on the Lachin Corridor, Artsakh presidential advisor Artak Beglaryan said.

Earlier on 22 February 2023, the UN court ordered Azerbaijan to take all measures to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions.

Friday's ICJ ruling in response to Armenia's application regarding the illegal Azerbaijani checkpoint installed on the Lachin Corridor confirms the court's position that Baku has not implemented the order to unblock the road and must comply with it, Beglaryan said in a post on Telegram.

The ICJ did not see any need for modifying its decision of February 22, 2023, he said.

"Obviously, this decision does not entail the legitimization of Azerbaijan's setup of an illegal checkpoint, but it can also have controversial interpretations, since it acknowledges the traffic disruptions. The court has not addressed the specific measures (a checkpoint, troops, concrete barriers or terrorists) used by Azerbaijan to block the traffic," he wrote.

"It remains for the international community (primarily the UN Security Council) to take comprehensive and urgent measures to ensure a proper implementation of the February 22 court ruling, especially given the complete blockade of humanitarian supplies imposed since June 15," Mr Beglaryan stressed.

In commenting on the ICJ decision on the Lachin corridor, Azerbaijan's foreign office claimed the ICJ has recognized the legality of the Azerbaijani checkpoint.
