ArmInfo. Armenia has chosen a democratic path of development, which also means the protection of human rights. head of the European Union Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Andrea Wiktorin stated at the Armenian Forum for Democracy on May 31.
According to her, democracy and human rights is an ongoing process that never ends. "One can not say and think that we had successful elections, and, thus, everything is fine in the country. In the context of the protection of human rights, the formation of a pluralism of opinions and aspects is very important. It is necessary to realize the importance of protecting human rights in the whole range of issues, and not in a single specific case>, the ambassador said. She added that taking into account the situation that has developed in Armenia, it is important to form sustainable societies. Such a program is implemented by the EU in the Syunik region of the Republic of Armenia.
The diplomat also touched upon the topic of the media. Wiktorin noted that she is a supporter of media independence. "They are the guardians of independence, they need to be protected, It's not enough just to say that the Internet is out of control ", said the head of the EU delegation. "If journalists are spreading misinformation, these cases should also be considered," she said, emphasizing the importance of developing investigative journalism.
At the same time, the Ambassador emphasized the importance of the role of civil society in ensuring inclusiveness, as well as the implementation of programs to empower women, <I want to see more women in government and peace processes, I am sure that women can find long-term solutions for peace. There is another problem - gender inequality. I want the Istanbul Convention to be ratified. I know that there are people who will not like the proposal I made, but I repeat: it is aimed at protecting women. I count on the representatives of the civil society to assist us>, she said.
