ArmInfo. The U.S. strongly supports Armenia-Turkey normalization, which would be important for not just these two countries but helpful for stability across the region, Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson, U.S. Department of State, told a briefing as he commented on suspension of Armenian airline overflight permissions by Turkey.
"We note with disappointment Turkiye's announcement that it would suspend Armenian airline overflight permissions. An agreement that had previously been reached between these two countries to resume air connections had been a very important confidence-building measure - not just between these two countries, but, again, for regional stability broadly. And it's our sincere hope that Turkiye and Armenia can continue to rebuild economic ties and open transportation links as well," he said.
On April 29, Turkey shut down its airspace for Armenian airplanes. On May 2, Turkey's authorities denied the Flyone Armenia airline an overflight permission, which made the airline cancel its Yerevan-Paris- Yerevan flight.
Turkish FM Mevlut Cavusoglu stated that Turkey's step was in response to "Yerevan's provocation", namely, the unveiling of a monument to the participants in the Operation Nemesis, on April 25.
