ArmInfo.Azerbaijan has launched an interstate arbitration procedure against Armenia in accordance with the Energy Charter Agreement. This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.
<Azerbaijan demanded financial compensation from Armenia for the violation of the sovereign rights of Azerbaijan and 30 years of "illegal occupation" of its territories (1991-2020). Thus, Armenia "violated" numerous provisions of the Energy Charter Treaty and the fundamental principles of international law>, Baku said, accusing Yerevan of allegedly illegal exploitation of the rich hydropower resources of Artsakh.
"In 1994, Armenia seized the Sarsang reservoir and hydroelectric power station in the course of "military aggression"," Baku was stated, forgetting that it was the Azerbaijani side that initiated the aggression against the Armenians.
<Armenia also built at least 37 small hydropower plants and electricity from these stations was exported to Armenia. For this purpose, a joint energy system of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh was established.
The purpose of this arbitration process is to ensure justice and compensation by Armenia for the illegal exploitation of energy resources in the internationally recognized, "sovereign territory of Azerbaijan" for almost 30 years>, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan said in a statement.
