ArmInfo. The Human Rights Defender of Artsakh Gegham Stepanyan sent a letter to the Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner, the Director General of UNICEF and other international human rights organizations and actors.
As the NKR HRD's press service reports, the Ombudsman referred to the violations of the children's rights to education and other fundamental rights, the humanitarian crisis caused as a result of the blockade of Artsakh by Azerbaijan, followed by deliberate disruptions of the work of Artsakh's critical infrastructure.
The Ombudsman emphasized that the inactive attitude by the international community is unacceptable which entails to the violation of children's right to education and other fundamental rights and urged the mentioned organizations and actors to go beyond the limits of calls and condemnations towards taking concrete targeted actions and to stay committed to the principles of the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Since December 12, 2022, for 44 days now, the Azerbaijani side, under a far-fetched environmental pretext, blocked the only road connecting Artsakh with the outside world. The population of the NKR (120,000 people, of which 30,000 are children) has been under blockade for the second month, deprived of basic means of subsistence. All this is happening against the background of the civilized community's tacit encouragement of Azerbaijan's inhumane actions.
