ArmInfo.Brussels is trying in every possible way to intervene in the process of normalization of relations between Baku and Yerevan. This was announced on December 8 at a briefing by official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commenting on the possibility of extending the period of stay of the EU observation mission in Armenia.
According to Zakharova, the EU is trying to strengthen its position on the ground and, ultimately, simply push Russia out of the region. <This is their dream. We will not try to get ahead of the developments now, there are different, diametrically opposed views, including among the Transcaucasian countries, on the strengthening of the extra-regional factor in the South Caucasus. We regularly discuss this topic with both Baku and Yerevan>, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized.
She added that when a decision is made to extend the mandate of the EU monitoring mission in Armenia, on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, then the Russian Foreign Ministry will make an additional comment. "In the meantime, everything leads to the fact that in its activities in the South Caucasus the European Union is guided solely by its own opportunistic interests."
On October 17, EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg approved sending 40 observers to Armenia on the border with Azerbaijan. The observers began their activity on October 20. The mission is designed for two months, and the issue of extending its mandate is already being discussed.
