Armenia and Iran are in solidarity that the problems between the countries of the region should be resolved through negotiations and constructive dialogue, excluding the use of force or the threat of its use. RA Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated this on October 20 at a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian in Yerevan.
"Today we state with satisfaction that relations between the two countries, based not only on the millennial brotherhood and friendship of our peoples, but also on a deep understanding of our national interests, are consistently deepening into various fields," Mirzoyan said.
The key topic of the ministers' discussion was the situation with regional security and stability. Mirzoyan presented to his counterpart the details related to the development of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The minister also touched upon the details and consequences of Azerbaijan's large-scale aggression on September 13-14 against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Armenia, unleashed by. "We reaffirmed the imperative to withdraw the Azerbaijani armed forces from the sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia, release and repatriate the Armenian prisoners of war illegally held in Azerbaijan and maintain the ceasefire. We agree that the problems between the countries of the region should be resolved through negotiations and constructive dialogue, excluding the use of force or the threat of its use. We highly appreciate the principled and clear position of friendly Iran regarding the territorial integrity of Armenia, as well as the efforts of the Iranian side aimed at establishing stability and peace in the region," Mirzoyan said.
At the meeting, the foreign ministers of the two countries discussed issues related to cooperation both on the bilateral and multilateral platforms, and expressed their readiness to enrich the Armenian-Iranian agenda through joint efforts. The heads of the foreign ministries exchanged views on the prospects for giving a new impetus to existing cooperation in the areas of trade, energy, transport and high technologies, and touched upon the continuation and completion of major joint economic projects. "We attach particular importance to strengthening ties with Iran in the field of road infrastructure. And in this regard, of course, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of implementing the project of the Persian Sea-Black Sea international transport corridor, which can include other interested parties and countries," the RA Foreign Minister said.
The visit of the Iranian Foreign Minister will also be marked by an important event: the opening ceremony of the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kapan. Mirzoyan considered this an important and symbolic step, indicating a readiness to bring cooperation between the two countries and friendly peoples to a qualitatively new level.
The Iranian minister, in turn, said that Iran is against foreign presence in the region. <The Iranian side is against the presence of foreign representatives in the region, both on the territory of Armenia and Azerbaijan. The activity of representatives of the region itself in it is important for us - for example, within the framework of the 3 + 3 platform. The Iranian side is against and will not accept changes in the historical borders in the region, this is our red line>, Abdollahian said.
The head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry once again stated that any geographical changes in the region, changes in historical borders are absolutely unacceptable for Iran. < We will take every step that will counter even any thought of it. We have common goals, opinions and concerns about the events that are taking place in the South Caucasus, and which we also discussed>, the minister noted. According to him, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said at a meeting with the leadership of Iran that he does not seek any changes in the borders.
