ArmInfo.Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan, on August 3, decided to arrest the public and political figure Avetik Chalabyan for another three months. Chalabyan informed the judge that a medical examination on August 2 revealed he had hypertension and needed out-patient treatment under a cardiologist's supervision.
It should be noted that during the trial, the judge refused to recuse himself, even though Avetik Chalabyan's defense attorneys and Chalabyan presented such justifications for the recusal.
Chalabyan is charged with trying to bribe the head of the students' council of the Agrarian University of Armenia into persuading 2,000 students to take part in protests. Chalabyan is denying the charges.
The Artsakh leadership, as well as 85 public and political figures, defended Chalabyan. They stated that such dubious actions are marring Armenia's reputation.
On July 27, Avetik Chalabyan was released.
