ArmInfo. The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned "biased and disconnected from reality " report of the European Parliament on Turkey for 2021.
Thus, in a statement published on the website of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, it is recalled that a resolution of a recommendatory nature was adopted by the European Parliament on June 7.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry assured that the report is based on a superficial and short-sighted approach.
"Turkey does not accept and rejects the biased and unrealistic assessments contained in the European Parliament's report based on a superficial and short-sighted approach, which ignores the obvious need to strengthen relations between our country and the EU," the communique says.
The ministry noted that Turkey's main expectation from the European Parliament is not that it becomes an instrument on the agenda of "narrow-minded" circles, but that this body demonstrates a position that stimulates a positive attitude towards EU institutions in order to revive the negotiation process on Turkey's entry into the community.
"Unfortunately, the European Parliament is taking the opposite position so far. Such a position on the part of the European Parliament, which is tolerant towards members of terrorist organizations and their propaganda of terrorism, is not surprising.
Thus, the European Parliament has lost authority and trust in the eyes of the Turkish public. For this reason, the unfounded views contained in the report, which reflect claims regarding democracy, the rule of law and human rights in relation to our country, as well as the narrow-minded efforts of one or two EU members regarding the Aegean, the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus, do not have for us any value," the statement said.
According to the statement, Turkey also expects all EU institutions to honor their commitments to Ankara. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that, first of all, it is about intensifying the process of Turkey's accession to the EU, accelerating the dialogue on visa liberalization, starting negotiations on updating the Customs Union, expanding cooperation in the fight against terrorism, as well as implementing the Plan for voluntary humanitarian readmission within the framework of migration cooperation.
"Instead of encouraging steps to address these issues, the report is yet another example of an isolated, idealized and biased position of the European Parliament and only damages the reputation of the European Parliament," the Turkish Foreign Ministry concluded.
It should be noted that in the report on Turkey, adopted on June 7 by 448 votes, MEPs warn that, despite Turkey's repeated statements that it seeks to become an EU member, over the past two years the country has consistently abandoned its obligations.
"Without clear and significant progress on EU-related reforms, the European Parliament cannot support the resumption of accession negotiations with Turkey," the report noted, deploring Turkey's difficult relationship with neighboring EU member states.
The report notes the continuing deterioration of the human rights situation in Turkey. MEPs deplore the ongoing legal and administrative pressure on civil society and human rights activists, lawyers and journalists. They call on the European Commission to ensure sufficient funding for pro-democracy efforts in Turkey.
It is stated that Turkey has openly disregarded the binding rulings of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Osman Kavala and others, and that the current Turkish government has deliberately destroyed any hopes of resuming the EU accession process at this time.
The MEPs call on the Turkish government to consider Finland and Sweden's applications for NATO membership in good faith, engage constructively in efforts to resolve possible outstanding issues and refrain from exerting any undue pressure in the process.
The European Parliament also called on Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.
