ArmInfo. The opposition movement held a picket in front of the EU Embassy in Armenia in order to convey a written appeal to the Ambassador, Ms. Andrea Wiktorin, demanding to respond to the recent events related to the incident between law enforcement officers and protesters.
During the rally, MP from the "Armenia" faction Aram Vardevanyan recalled that on June 3, not far from the EU diplomatic mission, police officers used a stun grenade against members of the opposition movement without warning, as a result of which numerous citizens were injured, receiving injuries of varying severity. At the same time, he expressed surprise at the fact that to this day the EU Embassy has not issued a statement in connection with the incident that occurred the day before. The parliamentarian also pointed to the use of brute disproportionate force not only against the protesters, but also against media representatives.
Having read until the end the statement of the Resistance Movement, addressing the EU Ambassador Ms. Wiktorin, Vardevanyan stressed that he expects a proper reaction from her side.
At the same time, he noted that, as a lawyer, he attaches importance to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. "I believed in its reality, I believed that the EU should also believe in and defend this Convention," the parliamentarian said. "I cannot understand the silence on the part of the European Union, when days earlier all the rights enshrined in this Convention were violated, and political persecution is being carried out against my associates," he said. In this context, Vardevanyan described what is happening as a policy of "double standards", which, in his opinion, is the most unacceptable. He recalled that in 2018, on every occasion during the Velvet Revolution, representatives of the European Embassy made statements several times a day, and today they are silent, thereby encouraging the atrocities of law enforcement officers.
It should be noted that after the picket near the building of the EU Embassy, the demonstrators went to France Square.
