ArmInfo.Russia's top priority is to accomplish its global geopolitical tasks and it will be top of Russia's foreign policy agenda until it has accomplished them. All the other things are of secondary importance, Fryodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of the Russia in Global Affairs journal, said in an interview with ArmInfo.
"At present Russia's foreign policy has exclusively focused on Ukraine, while retaining its geopolitical influence in all the other directions. And it will continue until the final results of the Ukraine developments are more or less clear. No doubt, the results of this most complicated geopolitical game will have a much broader geographical context," the analyst says.
Elaborating on the situation in the South Caucasus in general and in Armenia in particular, Mr Lukyanov stressed that, regardless of the results in Ukraine, the very agreements between Moscow, Yerevan and Baku that are supposed to be implemented rule out any disregard for Russia's presence in the region.
The problems Moscow is facing now are, in any case, affecting Russia's activity in dealing with some issues, including in the South Caucasus. However, keeping track of the processes in Armenia Moscow is not especially concerned over it, the reason being the pro-Russian orientation of most of Armenia's political forces.
"In turn, it makes the domestic political developments in Armenia and their outcome more predicable for Russia, which, in fact, is the reason for Russia's not interfering in Armenia's domestic affairs. I think amid a different political spectrum, the reaction could have been somewhat different as well. In any case, Moscow not siding with either party to the domestic political confrontation in Armenia is the right step, especially now that the international community has riveted its attention on any steps by Russia," Mr Lukyanov said.
