ArmInfo.The Yerevan Underground after Karen Demirchyan is marking its 41st anniversary.
Acting Director Gevorg Avetisyan addressed a congratulatory message on this occasion.
"Looking back t the 41-year-long history of the Yerevan Undergroundand remembering the builders with appreciation, we should say our special thanks to all those doing their best for the Underground's development," the message reads.
By the end of 1978 over 4 kilometres of tunnels were already bored through, when the plans were redesigned so that the system would be opened as a full underground metro.
On 7 March 1981 the system was triumphantly opened, becoming the eighth Soviet Metro system, with a first four station stage of 7.6 kilometres (4.7 mi). Since then, the system has grown to a 13.4 kilometres, ten-station network.
Today the metro operates as a single line, with a separate shuttle service on Shengavit-Charbakh branch, and covers 13.4 kilometre.
In 2010, Armenia and the EBRD signed an agreement on a renovation programme at the Yerevan Underground.
