ArmInfo.Armenia's Human Rights Defender Arman Tatoyan and British Ambassador to Armenia John Gallagher discussed a number of issues.
Mr Tatoyan informed Mr Gallagher of the problems in Armenia's judicial system, artificially protracted trials, abuse and arrests.
The two also discussed problems of women and children, including the campaign to break stereotypes. Amid the COVID-related restrictions, the Human Rights Defender's staff formed a task group to deal with the rights of women and children as complaints prove more instances of violence against women, children and old people during this period.
The sides highlighted journalists' role in ensuring freedom of speech and ruling out hate speech. The respect for journalists' professional activities is the pivot of their legal and conscientious work.
Mr Tatoyan presented the facts of violation of human rights Azerbaijani troops have committed in Armenia's border settlements. He emphasized the handover of the Armenian POWs being illegally kept in Azerbaijan. He drew Mr Gallagher's attention to the fact that people are being kept in political and military interests. Mr Tatoyan stressed that Azerbaijani troops must leave the Armenian territories, and a demilitarized zone must be formed round houses and roads. Moreover, the Azerbaijani authorities are sponsoring a policy of anti-Armenian sentiments.
Mr Tatoyan highlighted Great Britain's role in human rights protection and Armenia's cooperation with British human rights organizations.
In his turn, Mr Gallagher highly appreciated cooperation with Armenia's human rights defender throughout his term of office and expressed willingness for further cooperation.
