ArmInfo.Kazakhstan remaining within the orbit of Moscow will make Recep Erdogan's dreams of the Great Turan fade even faster, Vardan Voskanyan, Head of the Chair of Iranian Studies, Yerevan State University, told ArmInfo.
"The introduction of CSTO troops to Kazakhstan to stabilize the situation in that CSTO member-state is, among other things, an important step toward neutralizing Turkish expansion, which has been more and more clearly outlined since Erdognan came to power. I think Moscow's stronger influence on Kazakhstan will prove a serious blow to Ankara's ambitions in Central Asia," Mr Voskanyan said.
In this context, he noted that Turkey has always viewed Kazakhstan as its most important partner in implementing its expansionist policy. And now Erdogan is faced with the prospect of losing this stronghold of realizing his geopolitical plans in Central Asia, with Russia as his major geopolitical rival, while Erdogan's ambitions go as far as Russian territories.
In this context, Mr Voskanyan notes that such a blow to the idea of "Great Turan" is basically in Armenia's national interests, as Armenia is one of the prospective victims of Ankara's expansionist plans. And this is one of the reasons for the positive opinion by Armenia as CSTO chairing country. In this context, Armenia's leadership should prioritize cooperation within the CSTO in ensuring security rather than assistance in suppressing domestic processes.
In an interview with the public TV of Armenia, Secretary of the RA Security Council Armen Grigoryan reported the Armenian government's intention to send Armenian peacekeepers to Kazakhstan as part of a CSTO peacekeeping mission. He expressed hope that Armenia will receive assistance should a similar situation develop in the country.
"No democratic or revolutionary ideals or values can be compared with the restoration and strengthening of Armenia's security system. I think that by announcing the dispatch of its peacekeepers to Kazakhstan, being immediately involved in the process, contributing to Kazakhstan remaining within the orbit of Russia, our country has rendered a serious service to Moscow. And now we should calculate the benefits our country can and must get for that. I think Armenia's leadership should take it into account and put it into practice with the view of securing itself against external threats," Mr Voskanyan said.
