ArmInfo.Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, during his speech at the 11th meeting of the Armenia-Georgia intergovernmental commission in Tbilisi, announced the possibility of launching road communication with Azerbaijan.
"I would like to inform you that after the meeting organized in Sochi on November 26 through the mediation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the meeting in Brussels on December 14 through the mediation of EU Council President Charles Michel, it became possible to reach an agreement with Azerbaijan on the resumption of road communication," he said.
As for the railway communication, according to Pashinyan, an agreement in principle has already been reached with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the resumption of railway communication. "We are talking about the restoration of the Yeraskh-Julfa-Ordubad-Meghri-Horadiz railway, we hope to complete this work in the next 2-3 years. Of course, we must work to ensure that our agreements are fulfilled," Nikol Pashinyan added.
The Armenian Prime Minister also touched upon the opinions of some experts that the opening of the railway communication may be disadvantageous for Georgia. "I strongly disagree with this position, because if the Armenia-Nakhichevan-Iranian Islamic Republic railway is opened through Julfa, we will have the most efficient and optimal railway connection between the Persian Gulf and the Black Sea. This railway will pass through Iran. Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and will become a key factor not only for economic development, but also for regional security, "Pashinyan said.
