ArmInfo. The "Armenian Genocide Bill" was approved in the first reading in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament. The Armenian National Committee of the United Kingdom announced this.
"Today is a historic day for the Armenian cause," the UK ANC said in a short statement. It is reported that the first reading of the Armenian Genocide Bill approved without objection. It is noted that the next reading will take place on March 18, 2022.
The ANC, on the occasion of its first reading, thanked Conservative British MP Timothy Paul Loughton from East Worthing and Shoreham and all the other co-authors of the document for this success.
As the ANC statement also says, the purpose of the Bill's adoption is to perpetuate the memory of the Armenian Genocide through official recognition. The document contains three main provisions. First, there must be an official recognition that the killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire and adjacent regions in 1915-1923 were precisely Genocide. Secondly, annually to hold a day of remembrance of the victims of the genocide, including the Armenian Genocide, and thirdly, this will contribute to the education and awareness of the British public about the fact of the Armenian Genocide and the significance of the Genocide for the prevention of contemporary crimes against humanity and war crimes.
