Armenia changes procedure for obtaining and terminating RA  citizenship

ArmInfo.The Armenian government, represented by the RA Police, proposes to shorten the period of consideration of applications for obtaining Armenian  citizenship by establishing 90 working days instead of the current 6  months. Deputy Chief of the RA Police Ara Fidanyan stated this in the  parliament on October 26 in the first reading, presenting the bill on  amendments and additions to the law "On Citizenship of the Republic  of Armenia".

As Fidanyan explained, by the document, in particular, for citizens  of the former Soviet Union of Armenian nationality, permanently  residing in Armenia, the deadline for submitting applications for  obtaining RA citizenship will be extended until December 31, 2023.  The legislator specifies the authorities responsible for the  recognition process.

In addition, adult children of Armenian citizens are granted the  right to obtain citizenship without permanent residence in the  country for three years and corresponding knowledge of the Armenian  language. The possibility of obtaining a passport in all diplomatic  missions of Armenia and consular services is also envisaged.

The bill, as Fidanyan pointed out, also streamlines the provisions  related to the termination of the citizenship of children and adults,  the procedure for initiating proceedings on the suspension of  citizenship upon presentation of false documents.

As the deputy head of the law enforcement agency noted, in case of a  positive decision on the issue of granting citizenship, the Police  immediately apply to the RA President, and to the interdepartmental  commission on citizenship issues - exclusively in the case of a  negative decision. The presidential decree on the termination of RA  citizenship comes into force from the moment of submission of the  corresponding document confirming the fact of acquisition of the  citizenship of another state by the person to the Passport Service of  the RA Police. The terms of consideration of applications for  obtaining citizenship are also changing - instead of the current 6  months, by setting a period of 90 working days.
