ArmInfo.Until September 27, 2020, Armenia faced a choice between Russia and other sources and security systems. Today, the possibility of making such a choice for Yerevan has significantly decreased. Economist Suren Sahakyan expressed this opinion to ArmInfo.
"At the same time, I am deeply convinced that our country has the opportunity to increase its own degree of security through its diversification, moreover, in the future, the possibility of creating its own efficient security system. All this is possible, but possible only on one condition - the formation of an alternative current, political thinking, " he said.
Sahakyan is convinced that in the case of Armenia, security is by no means limited to the availability of weapons. He considers economic, energy, food security and, of course, politics and diplomacy to be no less important factors that significantly affect the country's defense capability. And, in his opinion, the Armenian leadership in any case, even at this stage, is considering alternative options for ensuring the country's security.
In his opinion, the whole question rests on the time required for the formation of these alternatives, which, according to Sahakyan, is well understood in Azerbaijan as well, which is the reason for Aliyev's haste in clarifying relations with Armenia. According to the economist's forecasts, time has begun to work for Armenia today. And the solution of Armenia's security problems, defining its clear place in the system of geopolitical coordinates, in his opinion, will significantly add problems to Baku.
Sahakyan is more than convinced that Armenia will again take its place in the system of geopolitical coordinates. In his opinion, the Armenian factor in the region continues to be of great importance. Otherwise, initiated by Baku and Ankara, the 44-day war simply would not have stopped or would not have ended at the stage at which it stopped. And of course, Armenia would not receive billions of dollars in financial support from the European Union.
"The world still needs us. The whole question is whether we ourselves are aware of what they want from us and what we can offer in return. Are we aware of our own role in international relations, are we ready to fulfill it and receive in return the much-coveted security guarantees of our own statehood? This is the main question, the answer to which we have to, must give, first of all, due to the fact that this is required by our own interests, "Sahakyan summed up.
