ArmInfo. The issue of placing Russian border guards on the remaining problem areas of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is being discussed with the active participation of the Russian side, which is ready to take appropriate steps, but this issue requires discussion in a trilateral format.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin stated this in an interview to Public Television, commenting on the proposal of the Prime Minister of Armenia on the deployment of strong points of Russian border guards along the entire border of the Republic of Armenia.
"We understand the importance of this problem," the diplomat said, noting that practical work in this direction is underway.
At the same time, he recalled that this idea was partially implemented in the Syunik region, where posts of Russian border guards are located on problem areas of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, in addition to those places of service that were trabditionally assigned to Russian border guards. In this context, he named the border with Iran and Turkey. "Now tangible additional funds have been attracted, including personnel, in order to place our border guards, especially where the road runs through two territories," he said.
The diplomat spoke about his visit to Syunik region in June. Referring to his conversations with residents of border communities, Kopyrkin emphasized: "I understood how important the presence of Russian border guards and flags is so that a stable situation remains, so that there are no incidents. And they really do it. If any problems arise, Russian border guards are involved in solving them. The presence of our border guards allows the local population, who found themselves in a new tragic situation for themselves, to feel more comfortable and more free. I think this is a very important mission of our border guards> .
