ArmInfo. Head of the Turkish parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Akif Cagatay Kilic called the forthcoming visit of the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation to the Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as historic. Kilic stated this during a meeting with a delegation of the Azerbaijani parliament headed by Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee for International Relations and Inter-parliamentary Connexions Samad Seyidov in Ankara.
According to him, the first visit of the Azerbaijani delegation to Lefkosa will become an important message for the whole world.
Kilic noted that Azerbaijan and Turkey are confidently looking into the future, adhering to the principle of "One people, two states". Turkey is proud of Azerbaijan's successes, the Turkish parliamentarian said.
According to him, on July 15, the parliament will host a commemorative event on the occasion of July 15, the Day of Democracy and National Unity, with the participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Speaker of the Parliament Mustafa Shentop, as well as parliamentary delegations of Azerbaijan and the TRNC.
On the same day, a meeting of the parliamentary delegations of Turkey, Azerbaijan and the TRNC will take place in the building of the Turkish parliament. After that, on June 16, the parliamentary delegation of Azerbaijan will visit the north of Cyprus.
"This is the first ever visit of a parliamentary delegation from Azerbaijan to the TRNC. The delegation will take part in the event marking the 47th anniversary of the start of the peacekeeping operation in Cyprus and July 20 - the Day of Peace and Freedom. The head of the Turkish state will also take part in the event. We are grateful to you for this important step. This is an important message to the whole world - another demonstration of friendship and brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Turkey, " Kilic said, Anadolu reports.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a self-proclaimed state that occupies the northern third of the island of Cyprus. From 1975 to 1983 this territory was called the Turkish Federal State of Northern Cyprus.
Turkey is the only country to recognize Northern Cyprus. According to international law, the Republic of Cyprus retains sovereignty over the entire territory that was part of it before 1974. This is the view shared by all other states and the UN.. Let us also note that, according to experts, if the Karabakh conflict is resolved, Azerbaijan will become the second state in the world to recognize the independence of the TRNC. In the meantime, Baku refrains from this step, fearing that Cyprus will recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh.
