ArmInfo. The role that Georgia is now playing in the region helping Azerbaijan and Armenia overcome hostilities and begin negotiations is impressive for NATO. NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai stated, after a meeting with Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.
Appathurai noted that various important issues of foreign policy were discussed at the meeting. "We talked about how to continue Georgia's movement towards NATO membership. We agreed that tremendous progress has been made over the past 10 years, and this progress was recognized at the recent summit.
We discussed the issue of regional security, and I would like to emphasize that the role that Georgia is now playing in the region, helping Azerbaijan and Armenia to overcome hostilities and start negotiations is impressive for NATO. This is a unique role that only Georgia can play. Georgia is doing it really creatively and energetically. We see that it helps Azerbaijan and Armenia to talk to each other. We are glad and grateful for this.
We also discussed security in the Black Sea region, which is deteriorating, we know that, but now we need to act and work together. We also discussed new security challenges such as cybersecurity, and we can do more in this area in the future, I will try to ensure that in my new position. We saw polarization in Georgia. I am very glad that with the support of the European Union, the Georgian parliament was able to pass the necessary changes to start functioning again to carry out important reforms.
I know that reforms are underway, including in the justice sector, and the U.S. government is very active in this regard.
We are on the right track and very satisfied. I believe that reforms are needed primarily by the Georgian people. The reforms to be adopted by the parliament will also bring Georgia closer to NATO, " said the NATO Secretary General's Special Representative, Georgia online reports.
It should be reminded that earlier, through the mediation of Georgia, 15 Armenian prisoners of war were exchanged for minefield maps. Azerbaijan handed over a group of held prisoners of war to Armenia in exchange for maps of the minefields of the Agdam region.
