ArmInfo.President Armen Sarkissian had a telephone conversation with the Chief of the General Staff of the RA Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Artak Davtyan.

As reported by the RA President's press service, the head of the  General Staff presented to the President the details of the capture  of the Armenian military during performing engineering works in  Gegharkunik region of RA, and border situation.

"The President of the Republic considers it a priority to use all the  capabilities of the relevant bodies, primarily the diplomatic and  Armed Forces of Armenia, for the return of captured military  personnel.  According to the President, it is necessary to do maximum  to ensure the safety and protection of the rights of our soldiers  guarding the border and the population of the Republic of Armenia," -  noted in the message.

Noting that the provocative actions of Azerbaijan on the territory of  the Republic of Armenia should receive a decisive response from  international partners, the international community, the President  said that he would continue to raise this issue in the course of  contacts with international partners.

As ArmInfo previously reported, on the morning of May 27 at the  border section of the Gegharkunik region of the Republic of Armenia,  while carrying out engineering work on the territory of the N  military unit of the Armenian Armed Forces, six servicemen of the  Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia were surrounded and taken  prisoner.

To note, on May 12 and 13, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces illegally  entered the territory of the Republic of Armenia in the direction of  Syunik and Gegharkunik, advanced 3.5 km and 2 km inland,  respectively, deployed their units and refuse to leave the territory.  In connection with the current situation, Armenia turned to the CSTO  to assist in finding a solution to this issue. The question still  remains unresolved. 

According to some estimates, more than 600 Azerbaijani military  forces were stationed in the sovereign territories of the Republic of  Armenia. On May 23, the RA Ministry of Defense reported that the  Azerbaijani side had withdrawn a part of its military from the  territory of Armenia. On May 25, as a result of the firing of the  open armed forces of Azerbaijan on the territory of Armenia, an  Armenian contract soldier was killed.
