At the meeting of the CSTO Council of Foreign Ministers, Acting Foreign Minister Ara Aivazian presented in detail the security environment in the Caucasian region of the CSTO, focusing on the tension created by the penetration of the Azerbaijani armed forces into the border regions of Armenia. "The penetration of the Azerbaijani armed forces into the sovereign territory of Armenia poses a direct threat to the security, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the CSTO member state, which is a challenge for the Collective Security Treaty Organization," Aivazian said.
The head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry informed his colleagues that under the current conditions the CSTO emergency response procedure is being updated, under which the issues of launching an appropriate multilateral mission are being resolved in order to monitor and assess the situation on the ground and develop proposals for further measures.
Referring to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Aivazian stressed that the use of force by Azerbaijan in no case can lead to a settlement of the conflict. According to him, the conflict should be resolved exclusively on a political and diplomatic platform, under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, on the basis of joint and comprehensive implementation of the principles developed by this mediation mission.
The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization adopted a statement "On strengthening the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological and Toxin Weapons." The document also notes that the CSTO member states consider it unacceptable to create international mechanisms that duplicate the functions of the BTWC and operate bypassing the UN Security Council.
The CSTO Foreign Ministers also adopted a statement "On Cooperation of the CSTO with States and International Organizations." In this statement, the CSTO member states speak about their interest in developing friendly and mutually beneficial relations with third countries and international organizations in maintaining peace and stability in the Eurasian region and confirm their readiness to build such cooperation on the basis of generally recognized norms and principles of international law, refusal of confrontation, resolving world problems exclusively by political and diplomatic means in accordance with the provisions and purposes of the UN Charter.
The meeting also adopted a statement in connection with the extension of the term of the treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States on the further reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms. In addition, the foreign ministers of the CSTO countries adopted a statement "On the 75th anniversary of the verdict of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg."
