ArmInfo. On the issue of normalization of relations with Armenia, Ankara presumably expects Yerevan to reject the agenda of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Such opinion was expressed to ArmInfo by the senior researcher at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, turkologist Viktor Nadein-Rayevsky.
"The process of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide is one of the most painful points in Turkey's foreign policy over the past decades. In this light, it is almost impossible to imagine the normalization of relations with Armenia while keeping the issue of international recognition of the genocide in Ankara on the agenda of Yerevan. Accordingly, I cannot imagine a consensus-based de-blockade of Armenia by Turkey in practice, " he said.
In general, the situation created in the region after the last war, according to the Turkologist, is very complex and multi-layered. First of all, due to the discussed unblocking of regional communications. In this particular case, the difficulty, according to Nadein - Raevsky, is the need to eliminate closed borders in the region in the absence of specific and clear security mechanisms.
Another problem on this path, the Turkologist considers the parallel commitment of Turkey and Azerbaijan, which is under its influence, to the ideology of Greater Turan, which Ankara is trying to spread from the Adriatic to the Pacific Ocean. And it is Armenia, with the Armenian question, the Karabakh problem, that has always been and continues to be an obstacle to these pan-Turkic plans. In particular, it hinders the establishment of full-fledged relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan.
According to Nadein-Rayevsky, despite all the improbability and low prospects of implementing this scenario, the Turkish leadership is in no way going to abandon the Big Turan. Especially, taking into account the weakening of their own positions within the country in order to ensure the consolidation of Turkish society around them. And even if there are no prospects for the realization of Erdogan's pan-Turkic aspirations in the form in which he and his entourage represent it, the very fact of their existence already creates numerous threats to the peace and stability of the region.
"The propaganda of Turan is conducted, including in the direction of the Turkic-speaking citizens of Russia. And history itself has repeatedly proved that Turkish dreams of pan-Turkism are a threat, including to Russia. And, as we can see from the example of Turkey's participation in the 44-day war, this factor must always and reverywhere be taken into account when building any relations with Turkey. And the recent discussions and statements in the Turkic Council best reveal the essence of the true intentions of Turkey and Azerbaijan, " the Turkologist concluded.
