ArmInfo. Secretary General of the Ombudsman Institution (EOI) Josef Siegele called on Azerbaijan to immediately release the Armenian prisoners of war and civilians held captive after the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The statement states that everyone deprived of their liberty in connection with the armed conflict must be returned immediately after the end of hostilities, without any preconditions. This should be seen exclusively in the context of human rights and the humanitarian process, as an international requirement for automatic action.
Delays in the return of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians humiliate human dignity and seriously violate the basic requirements guaranteed by the Geneva Conventions. This seriously undermines the post-war humanitarian process and international mandates guaranteeing human rights. The release of the prisoners and their safe return require immediate action, Siegele said in a statement.
