On February 25, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Armenia issued a statement in which they demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and warned him against using force against his people. The statement was signed by more than 40 high-ranking officers.
Reacting to the statement of the General Staff, Pashinyan called on his supporters to gather in Republic Square, and called the actions of the General Staff an unsuccessful attempt at a military coup. He also stated that he dismissed the head of the General Staff Onik Gasparyan. However, the President has not yet signed the prime minister's decision to dismiss Gasparyan.
The opposition has expressed support for the army and since yesterday evening has blocked Baghramyan Avenue, setting up tents in front of the parliament building.
It is also worth noting that information was spread in the media today that Pashinyan summoned Gasparyan this morning, but the latter refused to appear in the government. Gasparyan stressed that he is at his workplace and everyone can meet him there.
