ArmInfo. The United States is aware of the latest events in Armenia and is closely following the situation. The head of the US Department of State Press Service Ned Price stated this at a briefing, answering a question about the situation in Armenia and a request to assess whether the United States agrees with the assessment of the Armenian Prime Minister that the incident was an attempted coup.
"We call on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid any action that could lead to escalation, as well as avoid violence. We remind all parties of the unshakable principle of democracy - that the armed forces of a state should not interfere in domestic politics," he said.
He recalled that the United States has consistently supported the development of democratic processes and institutions in Armenia. "We continue to support Armenia's democracy and sovereignty and urge its leaders to resolve their disagreements peacefully, while respecting the rule of law, Armenia's democracy and its institutions," the US Department of State Spokesman said.
Clarifying if it was still an attempted military coup, Price recalled that the State Department has a procedure to determine if a coup took place.
At the same time, he added that there are three criteria for determining this fact by the State Department, as, for example, the United States did in Burma, where a military coup took place on February 1, "but in this case there was no such determination on their part."
"We continue to support the democracy and sovereignty of Armenia, and we will continue to follow very closely the development of events as they develop," Price summed up.
