ArmInfo.Strengthening relations with Georgia is one of Armenia's foreign policy priorities. Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia Tigran Avinyan stated this during a meeting with Georgian Ambassador to our country Giorgi Saganelidze. According to the press service of the RA government, touching upon the intergovernmental council, Avinyan pointed out the importance of the consistent strengthening of the Armenian-Georgian friendly interaction.
In turn, the Georgian diplomat expressed his conviction that thanks to joint and effective activities on the bilateral agenda, ambitious progress can be achieved.
The Deputy Prime Minister called the trade and economic cooperation one of the key components of the Armenian-Georgian relations, adding that there are all preconditions for the mutually beneficial expansion of this industry. In this context, the importance of resuming the work of the Armenian-Georgian intergovernmental commission was indicated.
Avinyan also presented the situation with the Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan, stressing that this issue is a priority for the Armenian government.
The parties touched upon issues related to the international transport corridor "Persian Gulf - Black Sea" and new opportunities within its framework. In the context of improving transport links between the two countries, the process of repairing roads from the Bavra and Gogavan checkpoints deep into Georgia was discussed.
In order to intensify bilateral contacts and develop tourism, the possibility of crossing the border using identification cards was mentioned. The parties discussed the project of the North-South energy corridor, the work already done in this direction, as well as the planned steps.
To note, according to the RA Statistical Committee, the volume of foreign trade turnover between Armenia and Georgia in January-December 2020 amounted to $ 129.7 million with a y-o-y decline of 12.9%. In particular, exports fell by 17% to $ 57.5 million, and imports by 9.4% to $ 72.2 million.
