ArmInfo. On December 8, within the framework of a working visit to France, RA Foreign Minister Ara Aivazian met with UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay.
During the meeting, the interlocutors highly appreciated the traditional close cooperation that has developed between Armenia and UNESCO, and expressed their readiness in the same spirit to take further steps to realize the goals of the structure.
The Foreign Minister and Director General touched upon the situation in the region after the Turkish- Azerbaijani aggression against Artsakh. The Director-General of UNESCO expressed deep condolences over the victims.
Ara Aivazian drew Audrey Azoulay's attention to the flagrant manifestations of intolerance towards the Armenian cultural and religious monuments of Artsakh, which are under the occupation of Azerbaijan. According to the minister, Azerbaijan's deliberate destruction of the Armenian historical and cultural heritage, attempts to desecrate or falsify their identity are a clear violation of international law, contradict the values of civilization and therefore deserve strong condemnation.
Minister Aivazian noted that in order to prevent a new cultural genocide on the part of Azerbaijan, a prompt response is needed from international organizations in order to bring the perpetrators to justice and completely prevent such actions. In this regard, the interlocutors exchanged views on the implementation of the proposal to send a UNESCO mission to the region.
